The Sasan Gir lion sanctuary project was started in 1972. Before and after independence, situations in Gir deteriorated speedily to the detriment of the Maldharis as well as the lions. So the government started to ponder over the matter.
Sasan Gir lion sanctuary is certainly a great success of India. From about 20 lions there are now around 300 lions in the park. Gir is also the home of one of the largest leopard populations in India. The other wild animals that you can look for are:
- the Four-Horned Antelope (which is the only four-horned ungulate in the world)
- Wild Boar
- Wolf
- Hyena
- Jackal
- Jungle Cat
- Chinkara
- Blue Bull
- Marsh Muggers
- wonderful variety of bird species
Among the other interesting aspects of Sasan Gir are the families locally called Siddis. They always marry within their own community. By religion they are Muslims and speak Gujarati. This community of pure African origin had settled in Jambur adjacent to the Lion Sanctuary.
The park of Sasan Gir in Gujarat keeps open from mid October. You can have your safari by jeep. You can reach the park by internal flight from Mumbai to Rajkot followed by a quite comfortable car transfer.
