Dwarka which is also spelled as Dvarka or Dwaraka is a city in the Jamnagar district of Gujarat. The city is also known as Dwarawati as per Sanskrit literature and is one of the seven most holy places for Hindus in the country.

The legendary city was the dwelling place of Lord Krishna. The city of Dwarka lies in the westernmost part of Gujarat located on the tip of the Saurashtra peninsula on the Arabian Sea. The city was once referred as the Golden City. As per Hindu teachings and Knowledge, Dwarka has a noteworthy significance since it is categorized under both in the 'Chardham' sites and the 'sapta-puris' or the seven sacred cities.

How to Reach Dwarka

The distance from Gujarat's largest city Ahmedabad to Dwarka is around 438 km on the main highways and the distance from Jamnagar to Dwarka is around 133 km. These two cities are well connected to Dwarka city with all means of transportation.

By Air

The nearest airport to Dwarka is in Jamnagar about 127 km away. The Mumbai International Airport connects almost all the flights from India to Jamnagar. From the Jamnagar Airport, one can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach Dwarka.

By Train

The city of Dwarka has its own Railway station just about 1.5 km from the main city. The railway station lies on the Western Railway network and is well-connected with Jamnagar, Mumbai and other major cities of India.

Express trains connect daily from Ahmedabad to Dwarka, as Ahmedabad is the nearest major railway junction. A few train names have being given below.

By Road

Dwarka is well linked by State highways to other cities and states in India. The State Transport Corporation connects Dwarka with major cities and towns of Gujarat and other states as well. Private luxury buses and tourist buses are also available from neighbouring cities to Dwarka. Once in Dwarka local buses and cycle rickshaws are best to explore the city and the nearby temples.

  • If visiting Dwarka in winters make sure to carry woolens as the nights may get chilly.
  • In summers, wear comfortable cottons and make sure to carry sunshades or a hat.
  • The "Dwarka Darshan" sight seeing bus facility operates twice a day from 8 am and 2 pm. Each trip is of about 5 to 6 hours.
  • Restaurants serve traditional vegetarian Gujarati, South and North Indian cuisines. Alcohol is prohibited in Dwarka.
