Loor

The charm of Loor Dance matches perfectly with the Haryana people. It is a folk dance form loved and adored in Haryana. Loor is mainly performed centering around the days of Holi, the festival of color in India. The name 'Loor' literally means 'girl'. It is a dance exclusively for the girls, predominantly played in Bangar and Bagar regions. The dance celebrates the onset of the spring season and indicates the time for sowing of Rabi crops. The dancers wear traditional costumes such as Ghagra and stand organized in two rows facing each other, in the form of a big semi circle. As the girls dance, the Ghagras in myriad hues flow in air creating a world full of colors.

Loor Dance is accompanied by songs that are unique to the dance itself. The lyrics are distinct in its own way and usually finds subject from the stories of a women's life, as they are. The girls sing about the various stages involved in a women's life including marriage and her post-marital life in a completely new environment with new people around. The Loor songs are usually full of emotions and many a times describe the pangs of separation from spouse. Such songs initially begin with mourning later culminating into a joyous ending as the rhythm of the song increases. Imaginary and dreamy sequences are depicted vividly by the sheer versatility in enactment. Marriage is another important subject and various situations are created for depiction in the Loor dance. Even the whole marriage is sometimes presented in Loor dance all through.
