After the Haryana Electricity Reform Act was passed in 1997 the State Electricity Board was divided into two corporate bodies. These two bodies are Haryana Power Generation Company Ltd and Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Ltd. Later the power of distribution and retail supply of Electricity was entrusted to Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam Ltd and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam Ltd for the northern and southern parts of the state respectively.
The primary functions of the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission are:
- Determine the tariff for generation, supply and transmission of Electricity.
- Help in intra- state transmission of Electricity.
- Regulate Electricity purchase and the process of issuing licenses to the distributors.
- Issue licenses.
- To encourage the generation of Electricity for renewable sources of energy.
- They also fix the necessary margin for the intra- State trading of Electricity.
- Restructure the Electricity Industry of Haryana.
