Sheesh Mahal

Among the glorious tourist destinations and numerous religious structures in Haryana, the Sheesh Mahal stands out in its own exclusivity and uniqueness. It has secured a special position amidst the other edifices in Haryana. It is poles apart from the rest.

The Sheesh Mahal has largely increased the historic value of the place. The interior of the entire structure is adorned with mirrors. The highly wrought and intricate decoration made by mirrors is the most incredible and astonishing part of Sheesh Mahal.

This noteworthy edifice, Sheesh Mahal, is located in a place called Farukhnagar. Built by a Nawab, Faujdar Khan, in about 1793, the Sheesh Mahal is a double-storey building. This marvel-ous structure is rectangular and it is made of an amalgamation of local stone, lime and slate.

The Sheesh Mahal has derived its name because of the awesome mirror work and the byzantine decorations within the building. The word 'Sheesh' is a Hindi word and it means mirror. The word 'Mahal' means hall. Thus, Sheesh Mahal actually means mirror hall.

The Sheesh Mahal complex also includes a jail in which prisoners were incarcerated and caged. There also stands a torture chamber in the building premise, which is a burning example of the brutal and harsh punishment system that was observed in the olden days.

The artistry of the Sheesh Mahal, specially the mirror work, seems to be inspired from the designs and patterns of the Mughal plalaces, which are in Delhi. Sheesh Mahal is a protected and cosseted monument, a heritage building of magnificent beauty in India.
