Sheikh Chehli Mausoleum is located in the Thanesar district of Haryana. This mausoleum is very near to the ancient mounds of Thanesar. This protected monument is supposed to be built by Sher Shah Suri. The mausoleum is an example of magnificent architecture.
The Sheikh Chehli Mausoleum though built by Sher Shah Suri, it is actually attributed to the famous Sufi saint Abdul Karim. But the Sufi saint was better known as Sheik Chehli. The dome of the mausoleum is much like that of the Tajmahal in Agra. It has an octagonal shape and it has a beautiful artificial terrace. The Sheikh Chehli Mausoleum, Thanesar is built of magnificent white marble and buff sandstone. The arches in the marble structural adds to the splendor of the monument. The windows in the tomb of Sheikh Chehli have been beautified by tracery screens of marble. In the very center of the mausoleum, the cenotaph of the Sufi saint Sheikh Chehli is placed.
There is also a madrasa inside the Sheikh Chehli Mausoleum. The madrasa has nine arched openings and also has a stone tank. The madrasa has a museum which exhibits numerous excavated objects. The mausoleum forms a part of a fort which is in ruins. There are three mounds that are located inside this fort. They cover an area of about five kilometer.
Sheikh Chehli Mausoleum in Haryana has become an popular tourist spot in India. Very near to this mausoleum, there is another place of interest. It is the Pathari Masjid built by Feroz Shah Tughlaq.
