Surajkund, situated 8 kms south of Delhi, houses a historical Sun Temple that stood here even in around 1000 AD. Tomar chieftain Surajpal, belonging to a clan of sun worshippers, fell in love with this place and developed the whole complex around the temple with an amphitheatre and a sun pool. The place gets its name
Surajkund from then on. Reminiscence of the old temple can still be seen today and with time the place developed as a pilgrimage.
In spite of the historical relevance of
Surajkund, the place is renowned for its
Surajkund Crafts Fair that takes place centering around the temple from February 1-15, every year. The
fair celebrates Indian crafts and tradition in all its colors and variety. Craftsmen, artisans, painters, weavers and sculptors from remote corners of India assemble to showcase their talents in
Surajkund Crafts Fair. Every year there is a theme state which tries to emphasize on the handlooms and handicrafts of the particular state. There is also a theme craft which gains major focus to create awareness. The stalls in the
Surajkund Crafts Fair also serve as workshops.
Fairs always mean lots of merriment and
Surajkund Crafts Fair is no exception. Along with the Craft shops recreational rides, lip-smacking food, cultural events and folk dances create an altogether different environment loved by the old and new alike.
