Kinnaur Tourism

The district of Kinnaur stretches in Himachal Pradesh between 77º45' to 79º00'35" East Longitudes and from 31º55'50" to 32º05'15" North Latitudes. Kinnaur shares international boundary on the East with Tibet. Uttar Kashi district on the South and South Eastern sides, Shimla district on the Western side and Lahaul and Spiti on the North and North-West side bounds Kinnaur. It is situated at an altitude ranging between 2,550 meters to 6,791 meters and has the district head -quarter in Reckong Peo. The total population count of Kinnaur is 78334 with a density of just 12 per sq.km. 84.3 % of males in Kinnaur are literate while the female literacy rate in Kinnaur is 64.4%

Rivers like Satluj, Spiti, Baspa, Yolong and Ropa flows through the mountainous district of Kinnaur. These rivers are full of fishes; especially Trout is an important catch of the region contributing to the economy of the district apart from animal husbandry. The place abounds in places of striking beauty being surrounded by the Himalayan and Dhauladhar range. Deep Gorges, Gushing streams, old monasteries and unique landscape attract tourists from all over India.

  • By Air: Jubbar Hatti at a distance of 244 km. houses the nearest airport to Kinnaur.

  • By Rail: The nearest narrow gauge railway station to Kinnaur is at Shimla at a distance of 250 kms.

  • By Road: The whole of the Kinnaur district is linked by well-maintained roads. National Highway 22 connects Kinnaur to Kalka where one can find the broad-gauge railway connection.
