The Audumbras were the leading and the most important of all the old clans of Himachal Pradesh. The tribe lived in the lower parts of the hilly area in Himachal. It is believed that they inhabited the region between the present day Jwalamukhi and the area known as Pathankot. The tribe of Audumbras also formed an individual and independent state in around the 2 B.C.

In accordance to great Epic, the Mahabharata, the domain that is the area under Himachal Pradesh at present, was formed of number of Janpadas, which means small republics. Each of these republics comprised of both a cultural unit and a state.
