The Himachal Pradesh of the twenty-first century is very different from that of the second or third B.C. Among the ancient tribes, which came to the land of the current state of Himachal Pradesh, the Kulindas was an ethnic group of people. They lived near the area surrounded by the three rivers viz. the Sutlej, the Beas and the Yamuna. Nearly all the other tribes and races that inhabited the modern day Himachal Pradesh have made that very particular area, their homes.
Since the cradle-days of humankind, men have settled in and around the valleys and in the foothills of the fascinating land of Himachal Pradesh. The Kulindas used to reside in the hilly areas of Shimla and Sirmour. The mesmerizing beauty of these two enthralling hills must have attracted the Kulindas to settle there. The Markanda valley, which is situated in the Sirmour hill, was an important area where lived a large number of people belonging to the clan of Kulindas.
The administration of Kulindas looked a lot like a republic with democratic attributes in it. The republic of Kulindas had a central assembly, the members of which share the power and authority of the king of the state.
The era of Kulindas tribe was a part of the Early History period of the ancient history of Himachal Pradesh. The other eras of the Early History are Audumbras, Trigarta, Kuluta, Gupta Empire and Harsha. The Kulindas era is the fourth of the six different parts of the Early History period.
