Animal Husbandry of Himachal Pradesh

Animal Husbandry is an important growth factor of Himachal Pradesh's economy. The breed of cattle available in the state plays a crucial role in its agricultural development. Recently Kangra district has been facilitated with seven units of angora rabbits that have been imported from West Germany.

Being a predominantly agrarian state, Himachal Pradesh has always emphasized on the quality of cattle. Since the locally found breeds of cows, sheep and buffaloes do not suffice the modern agricultural needs, hence, the place is taking continuous initiatives to upgrade the existing cattle groups.

Through poultry development, minimization of cattle diseases, diary development, fodder quality improvement and new plans for milk supply, Himachal Pradesh strives to form a progressive and advanced Animal Husbandry industry in its premises.

Infectious diseases are one vital aspect which is known to have a negative effect on the all-round growth of cattle in the state. By providing veterinary hospitals, mobile clinics and several other outdoor dispensaries, the state offers prompt cure services to all contagious ailments that can hinder further improvement of Animal Husbandry in Himachal Pradesh.

The establishment of milk chilling plants with a potential of 55 thousand liters in about 24 corners of the state is undoubtedly one of the biggest achievements of Himachal Pradesh Animal Husbandry.

Also, as a result of various advanced enterprising schemes, departmental milk supply counters were opened in about six places of the state. During the last few years, the total milk production has also increased considerably in Himachal Pradesh.

Today, there is no denying the fact that Himachal Pradesh has made a benchmark in the Animal Husbandry sector of India.
