Fishing in Himachal Pradesh


Known as one of the prime occupations of the rural population of the state, Fishing contributes significantly towards the economic development of Himachal Pradesh. Maharana Pratap Sagar and Gobind Sagar in the Kangra and Bilaspur districts are the major Fishing grounds of the place.

The Fisheries department of Himachal Pradesh has implemented many effective projects in the past that are responsible for today's prosperous Fishing industry of the state. From enacting several Acts and regulations to setting-up of the famous Mahseer Fishing site, the Government of the state has truly done a commendable job.

The notable varieties of Fish that are commonly utilized for commercial purposes by the Fishing sector of the state includes tuk, parrand, moh, pari, patha, bunchi, lohari, chilwa, makni, kangni, mukni, kalbaus, morah, gid, goolgali, kinni, rohi, jiwa, chipar, pallu, talana, mullae, sundal, khagga, dauli, takla, bami, chidu, saul, daula, buah and bachwa, among others.

The Trout Farming Project in collaboration with a Norwegian organization in 1990 and India's first ever running water Fish culture site at Bilaspur are some of the excellent achievements of the Himachal Pradesh Fishing sector.

The Himachal Pradesh Fisheries Act, which had passed in 1976, acts as the common platform on which various Fishing issues are brought up from time to time. In order to encourage the Fishermen of the state, the Government has also implemented different schemes that go a long way in making the Fishing occupants feel safe and secured. Some of the important Fishing schemes are:

  • Saving-cum-Relief scheme
  • Reservoirs Fishermen Accident insurance scheme
  • Fishermen Relief Fund scheme
  • Subsidy for the construction of fish ponds
  • Subsidy for the purchase of Fish carts

With revenue of more than Rs.108 lakhs in 2006, the Fishing industry of Himachal Pradesh proved its efficacy in the larger domain of national economy.
