Freedom Struggle of Himachal Pradesh

With the onslaught of the First World War, the Freedom Struggle of Himachal Pradesh took an eventful turn. Almost all the major states of the place enthusiastically extended their helping hands towards the people and groups that were engaged with the Indian Freedom fight movement.


The Mandi Conspiracy, being one of the revolutionary episodes of the Freedom Struggle of Himachal Pradesh, was plotted between December 1914 and January 1915. Suket and Mandi were chosen as the key places where rebels used to meet under the guidance of the historic Party of Gadhr. It was in these places that plan of executing the Wazir and Superintendent of Suket and Mandi and ransacking the respective treasuries, took place. But due to the strict surveillance abilities of the British Empire, those who were involved with plot, were condemned with life-long imprisonment.


Inspired by the immense influence of the Quit India Movement, the Sirmour state of Himachal Pradesh started protesting through the Pajhota agitation. Whereas the Praja Mandal of the place begun to protest in areas where the Britishers had a direct domination. Also, Kangra of Himachal Pradesh was one such place where the Congress Party launched massive agitation campaigns against the British Rule.


From Padam Dev, Daulat Ram, Pahari Gandhi and Baba Kashi Ram to Thakur Hazara Singh, Satya Dev, Dr. Y. S. Parmar, Shivanand Ramaul, Purnanand and Sada Ram Chandel, the brave Freedom fighters of Himachal Pradesh contributed enormously in converting the Struggle into a successful one.


The other states of the place also participated in various socio-political Movements that were meant for the local regions only.


Undoubtedly, Himachal Pradesh Freedom Struggle added a crucial phase to the Indian War of Independence.
