The beginning of the Post Independence happenings of Himachal Pradesh was symbolized by housing the province of Chief Commissioner on April 15th, 1948. This, in a way, paved the way for further important regional occurrences. The newly created Constitution of India was a key product of the Post Independent era. As a vital step towards a better set-up of states, the Constitution made Himachal Pradesh a part C state in 1950.
The merger of Bilaspur with Himachal Pradesh on first of July, 1954 was another vital landmark in the map of Independent India. Subsequently, on November 1st, 1956, the place achieved the distinct identity of a Union Territory.
