Shilparamam is a very famous arts and crafts village located in Madhapur, Hyderabad. It is located in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. With an attempt to create an environment for the preservation of traditional arts and crafts, Shilparamam village is set among splendid rocks, beautiful waterfalls and marvelous lawns. Located 25 kilometers from Hyderabad which is less than an hour's drive from the city of Hyderabad, the crafts village is held throughout the year with a series of cultural events by the local rural life of Hyderabad folks. The village is regarded as a home for thousands of artisans where they visit and explore the several arts and crafts which are displayed at village fairs and local shops at Hyderabad. The designs and forms are very unique and traditional, which attract tourists from all over the world and which they take back at home as souvenirs.
Shilparamam, conceived in the year 1992, is spread over 65 acres of land in the hi-tech hub city of India. Here the middleman is not in the picture as the buyers come and pick up objects directly from the makers without having to deal with middlemen. In the past few years, the Arts and Crafts village has elicited a tremendous response with thousands of crafts people from all over the country selling their creations for crores.
The village organizes a yearly celebration of "All-India Festival of Arts and crafts" which is held during February. It displays the talent and skill of the local artisans and craftsmen in a very traditional yet extravagant way. The various decorative pieces can be bought at a very reasonable price. Other main activities of the festival include folk music, folk dance; the open air amphitheatre which displays exemplary performance by the theatre artists, boating around the man-made lake and a joyful ride accompanied by a local village folk as a guide.
Major tourist attractions at Shilparamam include the rail museum (a house of sculptures and life size models which depicts the everyday activities of the rural artisans), the rock museum (natural formations in a scenic form by Subroto Basu), the recreational area (lush green lawns surrounded by ethnic motifs and terracotta sculptures), the Hyderabad haat (delicacies of various cultures cooked and served by women in the most traditional way) and the educational center (organizes series of workshops, training camps and short term training classes).
In order to reach Shilparamam, one can travel by rail as the railway station is about 25 km from Hyderabad or by APSRTC bus which is available 31 km from Hyderabad. Located at Madhapur, it is easily approachable by road and is well connected by the public transport as taxis or auto rickshaws are available from any part of Hyderabad . The timings of Shilparamam are 11.00 A.M. in the morning to 8.00 P.M in the evening. The ticket fair for adult is worth Rs. 10/- (approx.) and for children is worth Rs. 5/- (approx.)
Shilparamam is considered as a tribute to Andhra Pradesh. Indeed, Shilparamam is the place where perfect mental soothing can be attained from busy city life.
