Indo-Pak Series Preview
No cricket series has been as eagerly anticipated in recent times, as India's tour to Pakistan. The first of five one-day internationals will be played on Saturday, March 13th and life is expected to come to a standstill in both these cricket-obsessed countries, when the teams take to the field in the National stadium, Karachi.
Both teams will need to put aside concerns of security and politics to focus on what they do best. The Indian team, having returned from a tough tour of Australia, has a point to prove on the field. The Pakistani team's greatest challenge will probably lie off the field. There is so much interest in this series, so much national pride at stake and so much advice being offered, that it will be crucial for the players to separate the criticisms that matter from the background noise that does not. Javed Miandad has a crucial role to play here. His appeal to the Karachi crowd to display exemplary behaviour is an indicator of how much this series matters to him and indeed to every passionate spectator in the subcontinent.
Imran Khan, erstwhile captain of the Pakistani cricket team, and now a politician, believes this cricket series will help to heal the "long and bitter divide" between the two nations. He explained: "When the two countries are trying to become friendly, trying to ease tensions, then cricket plays a healing role, cricket becomes a cement in bonding the countries together. It transcends sport, it is much more than cricket, it is passion."
