International Airlines in India



The transformation of the world into a global village has made it easier for people to maintain their social and business network. The booming aviation industry helps people to travel to the remotest place in just a few hours. Being included in this global village, India witnessed an abrupt increase in the number of passengers travelling via air to and fro. The major international airlines in India ply because of their ability to attract Indian leisure and business travellers.

The increase in the number of air passengers in India, in turn, has increased the count of international airlines in India. India, being one of the significant tourist attractions, the number of foreigners visiting this gorgeous country is quite high. Apart from making commuting easier, the operation of several international flights has made the country prominent on the global map.

Some major international airlines in India, which also operates nationally within the country are mentioned below:

Air India


Air India, mainly based in Mumbai, is owned by the Indian government and is the airline carrying national flag of India. The other branches of Air India are located at Chennai and New Delhi. It provides worldwide cargo services too.

Indian Airlines


This is the second airline owned by the state and based in New Delhi. Though it's mainly a national airline, it even operates internationally. In 2007, the Government of India announced that Indian would be merged into Air India. On February 26 2011, Indian airlines ceased operating under its own brand and codes and completed its merger with Air India.

Air Sahara


Air Sahara, a private airline, operated from New Delhi and had the global flying rights. It was under a buyout plan by Jet Airways which rebranded the airline as JetLite. On April 17, 2019, JetLite grounded all of its flights and ceased all operations, in tandem with its parent company, Jet Airways.

Jet Airways


Jet Airways was a private airline that used to operate globally. It has now ceased all operations in early 2019.

Kingfisher Airlines


Kingfisher Airlines Limited was a private airline group based in India.Kingfisher Airlines had a huge share in the domestic air travel market until December 2011. However, the airline has run into losses and incurred high debts leading to finally closing its operations in 2012. Its chairman Vijay Mallya is presently in London after he fled to hide from creditors.
