Delhi Police

Delhi Police ensures the safety and security of the residents of Delhi. The Britishers established the police force after the Sepoy mutiny of 1857. As Delhi was formerly a part of Punjab, the Police force of Delhi was an intricate part of Punjab Police even after it became the capital city of the country in the year 1912.

With the passing time and to meet the demand of every Delhites, the Delhi Police force has undergone different organizational changes in order to ensure and to strengthen its functioning. The Khosla Commission formed by Government of India recommended these changes. Different organizational changes also resulted due to the alarming rates of crime in Delhi.

The Delhi Police Force started functioning with a work force that included 27 sub inspectors, 28 sawars, 2 inspectors, 985 foot constables and 110 head constables. The first headquarter of Delhi police was situated in Ambala. In 1961 the strength of this police force increased to 12,000. At present the total strength of the police force of Delhi stands at 57,497.

Presently, there are 123 police stations all over Delhi. Three big police stations of Delhi are Subzi Mandi police station, Paharganj and Kotwali police stations.

Delhi Traffic Police forms an integral part of Delhi Police. The traffic police looks forward to the smooth functioning of the traffic in Delhi.
