Geography of Jaisalmer

The geography of Jaisalmer defines the topographical features that are characteristic of the city. Situated in the midst of the Great Indian Thar Desert, the city of Jaisalmer is marked by the desert features. The city lies near the international border between India and Pakistan.

Jaisalmer location reveals that the city is bound by the districts of Barmer, Bikaner and Jodhpur on its sides. Pakistan lies on the north and north western frontier. The geographical coordinates of the city are 26.01 degrees to 28.02 degrees north latitude and 69.3 degrees to 72.2 degrees east longitude. Major cities of the country lies in close proximity of Jaisalmer and are well connected to the city.

Jaisalmer climate is arid and dominated by the desert type. The summers are warm and sultry while the winters are cold and dry. The region experiences almost negligible rainfall per year. The winter season continues for a shorter duration of time than the summer season. Winters in Jaisalmer begins from the month of November and continues till February while the summer season continues from the month of April to August.

Jaisalmer falls within the desert climatic zone and is marked by scanty vegetation. The desert city is dotted with magnificent forts and palaces that are frequently visited tourist destinations of western India.
