Jammu and Kashmir Population

The Jammu and Kashmir population is an important indicator of the developmental index of the state. A balanced growth and distribution of population leads to the balanced development of any region. The state of Jammu and Kashmir encompasses a total population of five lakhs nine eighty seven thousands three hundred and eighty nine according to the official census data of 1981.

Comprising of a heterogeneous population of Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and tribal communities, Jammu and Kashmir represents the secular identity of India. As per the census data of the year 1981, the state of Jammu and Kashmir comprise of three lakhs eight forty three thousands four hundred and fifty one Muslims, one lakh nine thirty thousands four hundred and forty eight Hindus and two thirteen thousands four hundred and ninety Buddhists and indigenous tribes.

Representing the varied cultural and social life of the state, the huge population of Jammu and Kashmir speaks several regional languages of Pahari, Kashmiri, Punjabi, Dogri, Gojari, Baltic, and Ladakhi. However most of the educated citizens of the state also speak Hindi and English.

The state of Jammu and Kashmir holds the seventeenth position in terms of population in India. The majority of the population of Jammu and Kashmir depends on farming and sheep rearing. The handicraft and handloom industries of Jammu and Kashmir also hold a predominant position in the economic scenario of the state. The beautifully woven woolen carpets, shawls and other woolen products display the rich artistic skill and creative imagination of the local population of the state.

The Jammu and Kashmir population mostly depends on traditional forms of occupation. Untouched and unaltered by the modern industrial developments, some pockets of Jammu and Kashmir may be described as backward areas. However the state government has taken several steps to improve the social, economic and political condition of the state.
