Jammu and Kashmir, located high up in the Indian subcontinent is famed for a multitude of reasons. Apart from the panoramic vistas and the cultural extravaganzas, Jammu and Kashmir education is at top end.

However, the recent insurgent operation of the militants and the political turmoil that has rocked the state has not helped the cause of education. However, the Jammu and Kashmir government is anything but lackadaisical when it comes to academics and is working in collaboration with the Center to alleviate the deplorable state of affairs. The government has proposed to provide free education to students hailing from families that are below poverty line in order to facilitate the widespread proliferation of education throughout the state.

Of course Jammu and Kashmir does house some excellent academic institutes that promote higher education. The state is the proud owner of some excellent schools, colleges, universities as well as premier engineering, medical and management institutes.

The remarkable progress achieved in the field of Jammu and Kashmir education is evinced by the creditable literacy rate of 59%. Over 15,000 schools and colleges are mushrooming in the state that record a student strength of more than 1.5 million. Likewise 32 colleges, 2 engineering colleges, four polytechnics and medical colleges as well as 37 Industrial Training Institutes impart quality education to over 0.4 lakh students in the state.
