The most celebrated river among the many Rivers & Lakes of Jammu and Kashmir is the Indus river. One of the oldest rivers in the world, the River Indus has witnessed some great historical events. The famous Indus Valley Civilization grew along the banks of this ancient river. The Indus River plays vital role in many mythological and legendary stories.
As soon as the Indus River descends from its mountainous course, it flows slowly and majestically. The banks of the River Indus add to the beauty of the land with the presence of lush green vegetation of Pine and Deodar. The Indus River flows through many regions between the Zanksar range and the Ladakh range. The Gilgit, Kabul and Gumal Rivers are some of the important tributaries of the Indus River. The river crosses three countries in its path, Pakistan, Afghanistan and our India.
