Jammu and Kashmir Agriculture

Jammu and Kashmir Agriculture is under the Government Departments of Jammu and Kashmir. The Government Departments of Jammu and Kashmir are well maintained and are assigned with many functions. The Agricultural Department of Jammu and Kashmir was set up in the state, before India gained its independence. The department was responsible to take necessary steps to increase the amount of production of crop in the state. During its set up, there was a department with single Directorate. But this scenario changed after 1981.

The Jammu and Kashmir Agriculture Department was divided among two Directorates; one for Kashmir and another one for Jammu in 1981-82. The ever growing population in the state posed a serious problem for this government department and thus systematic duties were assigned to the Directorates of the department. The department was divided so as to fully utilize the varied climatic conditions for the purpose of agriculture in the state.

The Agricultural Department of Jammu and Kashmir has undertaken a number of programs and policies so that the available land resource can be fully utilized for cultivation and proper utilization of the available water for irrigation projects.

There are two Agricultural Institutions in Jammu and Kashmir, established by the state Government. One of the Agricultural Universities has been set up in Jammu and the other in Kashmir. These institutions were established to carry on research programs and for technological development in the field of agriculture.

Courses and research programs are offered by the Agricultural Universities of Jammu and Kashmir:

  • Animal Husbandry
  • Agriculture
  • Sericulture
Jammu and Kashmir Agriculture Department in 2006 set up a fair known as the Kissan Mela where even the farmers participated with great enthusiasm.
