What is Central Water Commission?



Central Water Commission, a leading technical organization of the country, is a part of the Government of India. This organization works as a sister concern of the Water Resources Ministry. Apart from looking after the water resources of the nation, this commission is responsible for initiating, consulting and co-ordinating with the governments of the concerned states regarding conservation, utilization and control of the varied water resources. They even investigate, construct and execute different schemes for controlling flood, irrigation, navigation, supply of drinking water as well as development of power generated from water.

Is the Government of Jammu and Kashmir involved in this commission?



Being one of the major locations of the Basin of Indus River, the Water Commission of the Jammu and Kashmir Government is a part of the Central Government's Water Commission. It is because of this reason that the Central Water Commission in Jammu and Kashmir is known as Indus Basin Organization (I. B. O.)

The state of Jammu and Kashmir has got 1, 93, 762 sq. kms of total drainage area.

Who heads this commission of north India?



Though a Chairman heads the Central Water Commission of India but the project of this central commission in Jammu and Kashmir is headed by the Chief Engineer of the Indus Basin Organization. He or she is assisted in discharging the assigned duties by the M & A Directorates of the state, who is further supported by the Ex. Engineer of the Chenab Division. Field Officers form a significant part of the execution team of the commission.

Basis of Indus Basin Organization



The organization of Indus Basin, which is a part of the Central Water Commission in Jammu and Kashmir is based on Indus Waters Treaty, which was signed by the then Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Mohammad Ayub Khan, the then President of Pakistan on 19th September, 1960. If just this concerned state is taken into consideration, the Indus river, one of the major rivers along with the Chenab River and the Jhelum river flowing through the state are a part of this treaty.

Basic responsibilities of Indus Basin Organization (I. B. O)



Indus Basin Organization in Jammu and Kashmir is mainly responsible for the following major activities:
  • Appraising medium scale irrigation projects of the state.
  • General monitoring of the C. A. D. program, A. I. B. P., water body restoration and varied other schemes.
  • Investigating, surveying and preparing D. P. R. for the developmental projects of the resources of water.
  • Observing hydro-meteorological and hydrological data as well as forecasting about flood.
One of the major projects of this organization working on the water resources of the state is Ravi - Tawi lift irrigation. There are several other small activities and projects, in which this organization is involved as well.
