Jammu and Kashmir Cooperatives


Jammu and Kashmir Cooperatives were set up for the well being of the people of the state. In 1913, in Jammu and Kashmir the Cooperative Movement was undertaken for the first time. With the Cooperative Societies Act of 1913 in Jammu and Kashmir the future plans for establishing of Cooperative Credit Societies and Cooperative Societies were thought about.

The Cooperative Credit Societies Act of 1904 was already implemented in the rest of the country. This Act was set up so that the credit societies could register under it. This act was further amended for the benefit of the credit societies. There was no specific provisions mentioned for the Cooperative Societies Act of 1913 in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Cooperatives of Jammu and Kashmir can be classified into:

  • Cooperative Institutions
  • Registrar Cooperative Societies
The Cooperative Institutions in Jammu and Kashmir has societies based on the Apex level and a Cooperative Education Sector. This sector is assigned with the duty to undertake training programs for the cooperators and to enhance cooperative education in the state.

Registrar Cooperative Societies is controlled by the Registrar and he is assisted by Additional Registrar, Deputy Registrar, Joint Registrar, Assistant Registrar and District Audit Registrar.

The different societies associated with Jammu and Kashmir Cooperatives are:

  • Housing Cooperation
  • State Cooperative Bank
  • Cooperative Union
  • SCARDB
  • JAKFED
Cooperatives in Jammu and Kashmir are important Government Institutions. The establishment of Cooperative Banks in Jammu and Kashmir has been highly appreciated. There are nine such banks that have been set up so far. There are both Urban Cooperative Banks and Non-Urban Cooperative Banks in Jammu and Kashmir.
