Jammu and Kashmir General Administration Department


The Jammu and Kashmir General Administration Department supervises the entire spectrum of administration of the state. Managed and guided by the Honorable Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir, the General Administration Department which is popularly known as GAD, may be said to be the main center of all kinds of administrative activities of the state.

The General Administration Department of Jammu and Kashmir is led by the Administrative Secretary or by the Principal Secretary to the state Government. The General Administration Department supervises and regulates the official working of all the other important governmental departments. Supported by the Establishment-cum-Selection Committee for advice or guidance, the General Administration Department promptly solves various policy issues or other serious problems of grave concerns.

Most of the high officials of the General Administration Department are gazetted officers who have years of experience. However the General Administration Department is also equipped with many non- gazetted important officials. All the important officials below the rank of Under Secretary are non- gazetted officers who play a significant role in the general administration of all the departments of the state government.

The Jammu and Kashmir General Administration Department is further sub divided into different sections for better supervision of all the departments under the state government. Some of the notable sections of the General Administration Department of Jammu and Kashmir are:

  • Vigilance Section
  • Services Section
  • Administration Section
  • Establishment Section
  • Cabinet or Co-ordination Section
  • Legal Section
All the above mentioned sections play important role for a systematic and cohesive working of all the governmental departments of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Jammu and Kashmir General Administration Department has added to the transparency and effectives of the workings of the government officials of several departments of the state.
