Indian National Congress

The pretty as a picture hill station, Jammu and Kashmir is a politically active state. Starting from the pre-independence days, the Indian National Congress was an active player in the state’s political affairs.

The state’s political history attests the magnificent progress achieved under the able leadership of Congress stalwarts. Currently, the present government has been formed by the Congress and their ally, the People's Democratic Party (PDP). After the former PDP candidate Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was ousted, Ghulam Nabi Azad was elected Chief Minister and continues to hold office.

The largest and perhaps, the oldest democratic organization in the world, the Indian National Congress was created as a centripetal force and an unifying movement that brought together a multitude of Indians from different cultures, communities, castes and creeds to resist alien domination and thereby win the country’s freedom.

In its inception days, the Moderate leaders of the Congress sought non-confrontational policies. However the oppressive rule prompted them to resort extreme measures under the direction of visionaries like Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Pal, recognized universally as the Lal-Bal-Pal triumvirate. In order to arouse the patriotic fervor of the country’s men, the Congress leaders advocated the legendary Home Rule Movement and the swadeshi movement. The pioneering leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose played a monumental role in achieving the nations much desired freedom.

At present the Congress is achieving groundbreaking progress for the country under the proficient leadership of Mrs. Sonia Gandhi.
