The earliest phase of Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly came into existence in the year 1934. However, it was only in the year 1957 that the state of Jammu & Kashmir got its own Constitution. Today, the Legislative Assembly of Jammu & Kashmir with a maximum operational period of six years, accommodates a total of 89 members.
Legislative Assembly which is called as the lower house has been made an integral part of the Legislature of Jammu & Kashmir as per the section 46 rules of the the state's Constitution. Legislative Council which is also known as the upper house and the Governor are the two other prime elements of the Jammu & Kashmir Legislature.
As result of the 20th amendment of the Constitution in 1988, the strength of the Legislative Assembly of the valley has been increased from hundred to hundred and eleven. All the members of the Legislative Assembly in Jammu & Kashmir are elected via elections that are conducted in every territorial constituency of the state.
Among the 89 current members of the Legislative Assembly of the valley two are selected on the basis of nomination while the remaining are elected. Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business is a major trait of the Legislative Assembly of the state of Jammu & Kashmir.
Every territory of the valley has one representative of the Legislative Assembly. Moti Ram Baigra, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, Maulana Mohammad Syed Masudi and Mirza Mohammad Afzal Beg are the prominent members of the national level constituent assembly of Jammu & Kashmir.
