Local Self Governments in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir were established in the year 1886. this happened when two municipalities were formed. While one was for Jammu the other was for Kashmir.
Now the number of the local self governing bodies in the state are about seventy one. Out of which there are six municipal council and the sixty three municipal committees in the state. All the tourist places, almost all the important cities and the towns are controlled by local self governance.
In all there are three municipal councils in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Out of these three fall in the Kashmir division. The Municipal Council Division are Baramulla, Sopore and Anantnag.
These local self governments function at a regional level. This sort of governance started in our country from the year of 1687. it was first established in Madras. Later it did spread to other parts of the country.
The local self governments in the state of Jammu and Kashmir control the various parts of the state separately, by taking care of the basic needs of that particular area.
