Municipality

The municipality of Jammu was first established in the year of 1886. The municipality of the state of Jammu and Kashmir was formed as a result of the reform measures that were undertaken by Lord Rippan. The development of the municipal committees was initiated by the Municipal Act of 1886. This act was again amended in the year 1889. The first two municipalities of this state were formed under this act.

In the year 1893 a separate named as Municipal Administration and Jails was established. The Jammu and Kashmir regulation was enacted in the year 1913. With the enactment of this regulation the provision for elective elements was introduced in the year of 1930 in these municipalities.

Later when the J&K Municipal Act was passed in the year of 1941 the municipalities of the state of Jammu and Kashmir were placed the control of ministers. They were assisted by the secretary, revenue officer, health officer, etc.

With the passage of the already existing 23 wards of the city were divided and made to 48 wards. Further 23 new wards were added and the total number of wards in the city came up to 71.

The government superseded the elected Municipal Council of Jammu in the year 1960, then in 1975 and again in the year of 1983. After the Independence there had been elections in the Jammu Municipality only for four times. That was in the year of 1956, then 1972, followed by an election in the year of 1980 and the last one was held in 2005.
