Traditionally, the state of Jammu and Kashmir comprised four political areas - Jammu to the southern boundaries of Pakistan and India, Ladakh to the eastern frontiers with China, Baltistan regions to the northern boundaries with Pakistan and China, and Kashmir Valley to the east which shares its boundaries with Pakistan.
Jammu Kashmir National Parties: An Overview
The Jammu and Kashmir state assembly consists of 87 assembly constituencies and currently, the Indian National Congress and the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference enjoy majority in the house since they won 17 and 28 seats respectively in the 2008 Assembly Elections and formed an alliance to rule the state for five years. At present, the Chief Minister of the state of Jammu and Kashmir is Omar Abdullah, who represents the National Conference Party. Pandit Mangat Ram Sharma has been appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of the state and he belongs to the Indian National Congress. Omar is the youngest person to become the Chief Minister of the state.
The Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party
The Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party is also popularly known as the PDP. It is a state level political party in the northernmost state in India. The People's Democratic Party was formed in 1999 by Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, who served as the Home Minister of the Union Government under the Prime Ministership of Shri Vishwanath Pratap Singh. The People's Democratic Party came into power in the state when it emerged victorious in the assembly elections held in the state in October 2002. Since 2004, PDP has one representative each in the Rajya Sabha and in the Lok Sabha. The party was an ally of the governing United Progressive Alliance in the center till the General Elections in 2009.
Currently, the chairperson of the People's Democratic Party is Ms. Mehbooba Mufti, who is the daughter of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Dr. Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was the Chief Minister of the state, representing the PDP-Congress Coalition from October 2002 to November 2005. He is the founder of the party.

Jammu & Kashmir National Conference
The Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (NC) is a state level political party in the state of J&K in India. Sheikh Abdullah founded the party on June 11, 1939, which was eight years before the freedom of India in 1947. Since then, the National Conference has controlled electoral affairs of the state for an extensive period. From 1981-2002, the National Conference was headed by Farooq Abdullah, who is the son of Sheikh Abdullah. Afterward, the party was headed by Omar Abdullah, son of Farooq Abdullah (2002-2009). In 2009, Dr. Farooq Abdullah was once more nominated as the Chairperson of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference.

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee
Jammu & Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee is a unit of the Indian National Congress. At present, the Indian National Congress has 17 legislators in the Jammu and Kashmir State Assembly. It is a coalition partner of the ruling National Conference. Previously, it allied with the People's Democratic Party (PDP) from 2002 to 2007.
