The wide variety of
Jammu and Kashmir languages reflects the heterogeneity of the population of the state. The majority of the population of Jammu and Kashmir speaks regional languages of
Kashmiri, Dogri, Pahari, Punjabi, Ladakhi and Urdu. Some of the educated citizens of the state also converse in the national language of Hindi and the global language of English.
Almost all the regional languages of Jammu and Kashmir belong to either the Indo- European or the Sino-Tibetan language group. The origin of the local dialects of Jammu and Kashmir can be traced back to either of the two major groups of languages.
Kashmiri, Gojri and Punjabi languages bear a heavy influence of the Indo- European language group. One of the prominent languages of Jammu and Kashmir, Kashmiri is spoken by a comparatively smaller group of local population who are the inhabitants of the enchanting valleys of the state. A large number of people of the district of Azad speak the Punjabi language. While another prominent language of the state, Gojri is the local dialect of pastoral tribes of Gujar and Bakerwal.
Most of the indigenous tribal groups of Jammu and Kashmir who are the inhabitants of the hilly region speak a wide variety of Pahari language. Ladakhi is spoken mostly by many indigenous population of the state.
Language is an important means of communication through the effective use of words, and signs. The majority of the educated citizens who stay in the urban areas of the state are well conversant in the global language of English. Hindi is also another popular and common language of the local inhabitants of the state. The
