Urdu


Urdu is a language that is spoken by many people in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. From the time of the Mughal rule in Jammu and Kashmir, a new language came into being. This language came to be known as Urdu. Apart from this name, the language was also called Lashkari at times. The other names for the language are Hindustani and Urdu-i-Moalla Raikhta.

The language of Urdu, has accepted many words from languages like:

  • Persian
  • Turkish
  • Arabic
  • Latin
  • Sanskrit
  • English
Urdu is called Esperanto, which means an artificial language that is based on words common to most of the European languages. Urdu is a language that can be said to be a global language. This is the reason that Urdu has become very popular in the states of North India. Urdu will definitely flourish in a place that has people of various cultures living together.

In the neighboring state of Punjab, Urdu is a popular language and as Punjab is the link between Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of the country, the obvious impact of Urdu is evident in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

When the British established their rule in India, they took up Urdu as the link language. It helped them a lot to communicate with the Indians. Urdu has left a strong influence on each genre of poetry in Kashmir. It has also influenced the different native dialects of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The universal language of Urdu was given the status of an official language in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
