Almonds are an integral part of a Kashmiri meal. Jammu and Kashmir boasts of a plethora of flora and fauna. Among these, the Jammu and Kashmir Almond trees deserve special mention. Even though Almond trees grow well in the Mediterranean climate, the Jammu and Kashmir weather has not impeded their growth. Rather, the trees grow perfectly in this environment.
Almond is a part and parcel of the livelihood of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. These nuts boost the economy of the state as well. The populace uses the oil of Almond for a multitude of purposes like cooking, garnishing and personal hygiene.
Almonds are of two types, bitter and sweet. Bitter almonds, which are mainly found in Jammu and Kashmir, are used for non-edible purposes, whereas, the sweet ones are imported from Central Asian countries viz. Afghanistan.
The humble almond has a colorful history in Jammu and Kashmir as well. Legend has it that the Mughal Emperors coming from Central Asia found it fortifying for their troops. Since then, almond has been held in high esteem by the Mughals. It is associated with several artwork motifs and various romantic tales as well.
Jammu and Kashmir Almond is one of the essential ingredients in several Kashmiri delicacies. It is a useful item for the hardy people of the state.
