Bahu Fort

The Bahu Fort overlooks a panoramic river Tawi, just 5 kms. away from the main city of Jammu. Situated on the elevation of the flowing Bahi river, this imposing heritage structure is perhaps the oldest in Jammu, dating back to around 3000 years. The Bahu Fort was originally constructed under the supervision of the then ruler, King Bahulochana. Later on successive rulers, including those from the Dogra rulers, have added much to the grandeur of the original edifice. The fort has been extended and modified far from what it was in its primary stage.

Perched on top of a rock face, the Bahu Fort houses the renowned Mahakali Temple, largely famous as the Bawe - Wali Mata. Bawe - Wali Mata is the presiding diety of the city of Jammu and is, thus, highly regarded by the denizens of Jammu. There is mass conglomeration on Tuesdays and Sundays especially for worshiping the Goddess. Major festival in the Bahu Temple includes the Bahu Mela during the Navaratri festival which is celebrated with much faith, passion, joy and festivity.

The royal gardens of Bahu Fort is known as the Bagh -e- Bahu. Over the years this has become a favored choice for the picnickers, especially during the cool summers. The terraced garden is ornamented with trees, decorative flowers and waterfalls. An artificial water body adds to the serenity of the place. Recreational facilities like boating have added to the charm. The government is also planning to arrange for cable car rides plying from Bahu Fort to Mubarak Mandi Complex, especially keeping in mind the visitors to the shrine of Mata Vaishnodevi.
