Bahu Temple

The Bahu Temple is dedicated to the Goddess Kali who is the reigning deity of the region of Jammu and Kashmir. The temple is situated inside the Bahu Fort, which is perhaps one of the oldest forts of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The temple is popularly known as the temple for the Bave Wali Mata.

The Bahu fort is a fortress representative of the grandiosity of the Dogra kings and the royal family that resided and ruled in the region. The fort was originally constructed by Raja Bahulochan and later ameliorated by the Dogra kings. The original structure is more than 300 years of age. The fort is still maintained well by the government of Jammu and Kashmir and the terraced garden with the floral displays, ancient trees and waterfalls is a popular picnic spot for the people of the city.

The fort and the temple are placed on the bank of the River Tawi. The temple is sacred to the people of the city. Regular prayers are offered to the powerful deity and the pilgrims gather to seek her blessings. The pilgrims assemble in large numbers especially on Tuesdays and Sundays. Wading through the river Tawi is also a popular feature of the worship in the Bahu Temple.

The Maha Maya Temple lies in close vicinity of the Bahu Fort. The ancient temple is placed amidst the wooded city forest behind the Bahu fort. The Bahu temple is one of the popular itineraries of the Jammu and Kashmir pilgrim tourism.
