Dachigam National Park attracts tourists for its unspoiled natural beauty with huge variety of flora and fauna. The Park lies very close to the beautiful city of Srinagar, which is the capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The fascinating landscape at Dachigam extends over a huge area with steep slopes, blue lakes, deep valleys, stony ridges, and alpine pastures. It has been demarcated into Lower and Upper Dachigam regions on the basis of altitude. The Lower Dachigam regions is located at an altitude of 1700 meters whereas the Upper Dachigam regions at 4300 meters.
Dachigam National Park in Jammu and Kashmir encompasses an area of 141 sq km. The National Park is open throughout the year. But the ideal time to visit the Upper Dachigam is from May to August; and Lower Dachigam is from September to December. During autumn in the month of October, it's a wonderful experience to view the trees laden with flowers.
In higher Dachigam region of the Dachigam National Park, a beautiful lake known as Masrar Lake is located at the source of the Dachigam River. The river is the main source of water for the plants and animals of the region. The main attractions of Dachigam National Park are the rare hangul, or Kashmir stag, thick-coated gray langur, brown bears, leopard cats and the Himalayan black bears. The National Park is also home to numerous species of colorful Himalayan birds like the bearded vultures (lammergeier) crimson tagopan, monal pheasant, koklass pheasant, golden eagles, blood pheasant, and many more. The Government has implemented several steps to conserve the various endangered wildlife species.
