Fishing

During spring and summer fishing is a major business in Kashmir. It is said that due to the initiative of the British fishing has flourished in Jammu and Kashmir. They introduced several varieties of trout including the brown and rainbow to the lakes, streams and rivers of Kashmir. They have even introduced a system of anglers for reserving ' beats' on the various rivers of the state. You can book a beat for yourself through the Indian Government Tourist Office or at the Tourist Reception Centre in Srinagar. Among the three types of streams, the beats can be reserved either for a day or a week.

The fishing season in Jammu and Kashmir extends from the month of April to October. Throughout the fishing season 61 beats are open for reservation. Fishing is encouraged in the rivers of Sindh and Wangat and also in the lakes Gangabal, Krishanshar, Vishanshar, and Nunkhol. The equipments that are required for fishing are provided by the administration and tourism for the convenience of the tourists.

One of the important requirements for fishing in Kashmir is a fly. The most commonly used flies in Kashmir are Butcher, Peacock, March Brown, Jinger Quill, Watson's Fancy, Coachman, Woodcock and Green. One of the major rivers of Jammu and Kashmir is Sindh, which is usually covered with snow, but it starts melting from May to July. The rivers are calm and quiet during months of April, August and September and you can find the bigger fish for fishing in the stiller waters.
