Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve is situated 48 km to the southwest of Srinagar and covers an area of 180 sq km of land. The Biosphere Reserve is covered with lush green conifers, accounting for nearly 90 % of the population of flora. Some of the major species found in the region are Cedrus deodara, Pinus griffithii, Aesculus indica, Abies pindrow, etc. Apart from the Dicotyledonus herbs, the land is also covered with shrubs like Indigofera heterantha, Sorbaria tomentosa, Viburnum spp., etc.
Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve is safe haven for numerous rare and endangered species of animals and birds. Scores of tourists come here to have a look at these wild animals like Leopard, Red Fox, Serow, Musk Deer, Brown Bear, Leopard, Hangul, Black Bear, etc. Both resident and migratory birds namely European hoopoe, Snow Cock, Jungle Crow, Koklas, Blue Rock Pigeon, Griffon vulture, Kashmir roller, etc, live in the lap of nature.
Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve in Jammu and Kashmir is situated at an altitude of 2,400 to 4,300 above the sea level. It lies just 57 kilometers from the Srinagar airport and the nearest railway station Jammu lies at a distance of 342 kilometers; both the places are very well connected to all the Indian cities.
