The Mattan temple of the Hindus in Anantnag near Pahalgam is famous for the beautiful Shiva Lingam. The pious Lingam is preserved in this temple complex within a beautiful brick structure that is surrounded by crystal clear water on all sides.

It is one of those religious places in India where the priests and pundits used to gather for worshiping the Sun god. It was thus a popular place for Surya Tirth in the subcontinent.

Presently the Mattan temple complex is one of the much-guarded areas of Jammu and Kashmir. It is controlled by the para- military forces. You need to secure formal permission from them in order to enter this temple complex.
