Overa-Aru Biosphere Reserve

Overa-Aru Biosphere Reserve is located 76-km Southeast of Srinagar, the capital city of Jammu and Kashmir. The Biosphere Reserve is spread over a total area of 32-sq-km. Wildlife enthusiasts come here to view some of the rare and endangered species namely the Hangul, grey langur, Monal, Musk Deer, Leopard, Brown Bear, Himalayan mouse hare, Koklas, Snow Cock, rhesus macaque, etc.

Overa-Aru Biosphere Reserve is situated at an altitude within 3,000 to 5,425 metros above sea level. The ideal season for visiting the Biosphere Reserve depends on what a tourist wants to see during his visit. For bird viewing in the lower areas, the ideal time is from March to May and if you are interested for animal viewing, September to March is the ideal time.

The area is covered by thick vegetation of coniferous trees, accounting for 90% of the flora. Some of the species found in the region are Abies pindrow, Cedrus deodara, Pinus griffithii, Aesculus indica etc. The shrubs covering the area are Indigofera heterantha, Viburnum spp., Sorbaria tomentosa etc.

Overa-Aru Biosphere Reserve in Jamu and Kashmir can be reached very easily by air, road and train. Regular buses ply from Srinagar and Anantnag for the reserve. The nearest airport is at Srinagar, connected to all major Indian cities whereas the nearest railway station is at Jammu.

Overa-Aru Biosphere Reserve is home to diverse species of birds, both resident and migratory. The common birds seen in the region are griffon vulture, monal, snow cock, koklas, Monal, Snow Cock, Blue Rock Pigeon, Kashmir roller, European Hoopoe, European hoopoe, jungle crow, Koklas, Blue Rock Pigeon, Griffon Vulture, Kashmir Roller, etc.
