Phyang


Phyang is a Buddhist monastery in Jammu and Kashmir. This is considered as one of the popular heritage spots in Jammu and Kashmir state. The monastery has been built during the 16th century. From Leh, the monastery is only at a distance of 17 km. This monastery is maintained by a sect of the Buddhists, known as the Red Cap sect.

Phyang Hill was a seat of Buddhist teachings at one point of time. These teachings were known as the Digung teachings. This teaching procedure was started by a group of monks who also set up a monastery in this region in 1515 AD. Phyang Monastery in Jammu and Kashmir is now looked after by Apchi Choski Dolma.

Phyang monastery is a complex that houses many other small shrines. The monastery has preserved many wall paintings for centuries. Tourists from different parts of the country come to see these murals that have rich artistic values.

Another major tourist attraction in Phyang monastery is the well restored museum. The museum was built about 900 years ago and it houses many artifacts and idols. The museum has a collection of weapons belonging to the Mongolians, Chinese and Tibetan warriors.

A festival is celebrated in the Phyang Monastery known as the Phyang Festival. This festival is very popular among the local people of Leh in Jammu and Kashmir. Phyang festival is observed according to the Tibetan calender. It is generally celebrated during the first month of every year. The monastery of Phyang also hosts traditional dance programs.
