Rani Charak Mahal


The Rani Charak Mahal stands resplendent in all its grandeur on the banks of the River Tawi in the Jammu city. It forms a part of the Mubarak Mandi Complex which houses the government offices in its precincts. One end of the Rani Charak Mahal is connected to the treasury house or the Toshakhana of the Mubarak Mandi Palace. One of the oldest structure in the complex, it dates back nearly to 150 years. The earthquake of 2005 has caused certain damages including some cracks to the beautiful edifice but still it bears the mark of brilliance and magnificence.

The Rani Charak Mahal in Jammu clearly bears the architectural style that was predominant in the 19 th century. Constructed of mortar and red bricks, it has the characteristic hue of red stone. The building looks magnificent in the rays of the rising sun and the setting sun. The palace building is adorned with arches and columns and has become a part of the heritage of Jammu. The Dogras of Kashmir guard the edifice as the remains from their honored ancestors.

The Rani Charak Mahal also houses several valuables. The artifacts from the collection includes priceless antiques of idols, a golden throne, palanquins and utensils. Recently, the government is trying to renovate the building for better preservation of the heritage. Situated in the heart of Mubarak Mandi Complex, the Rani Charak Mahal is easily accessible from almost any part of the Jammu city by auto rickshaw and mini buses at a nominal fare.
