A common place of worship of the different communities, the Shahdera Sharief is situated in the district of Rajouri in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The pilgrimage is the shrine of the Baba Ghulam Shah who had settled in the mountainous region of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Pir Baba or the saint, Baba Ghulam Shah was born in the village of Saidan in Rawalpindi, which is now a part of Pakistan. The saint was the descendant of the Syed family of Saidan. The saint spent most of his life preaching in the Shahdera region. The shrine was built to commemorate the saint after his death and is sacred to the Muslims, Hindus and the Sikhs equally. The pilgrims gather every year in large numbers in the district of Rajouri to offers prayers at the shrine and to receive the blessings of the saint.
The shrine of Baba Ghulam Shah is one of the most important parts of the Jammu and Kashmir pilgrim tourism and is situated at a distance of 30 kilometers from the district of Rajouri. The district of Rajouri is situated at a distance of 158 kilometers from the city of Jammu. The district is connected to the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir through roads. Jeeps and buses ply regularly to the district of Rajouri. The tourists may avail the buses or private jeeps to travel to the Shahdera Sharief. The shrine is a symbol of harmony of the various communities in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
