Among the heritage spots in Jammu and Kashmir, the Buddhist monastery of Spituk attracts many tourists from all parts of the country. This monastery was built during 11th century. Spituk monastery houses three other small chapels.
In the initial years, Spituk monastery in Jammu and Kashmir was maintained by Kadampa School. In the later years the maintenance of the monastery was handed over to Dharmaraja Takspa Bum-Lama Lhawang Lotus. A new order known as the Gelukpa order was introduced in the monastery under him. The same order is still followed in the monastery of Spituk. A number of monasteries like Saboo, Sankar and Stok are associated with the Spituk monastery.
Inside the monastery of Spituk, one will find the beautiful image of Lord Buddha. The tourists will also get to see an image of Mahakaal and Amitayus, preserved in the monastery. Spituk monastery has also preserved ancient murals, arms and masks. The main temple in the complex is known as Dukhang.
In the monastery complex of Spituk, the Gustor festival is celebrated. This occasion is observed in the eleventh month of the year, according to the Tibetan calender. The Gustor festival is celebrated every year, from 27th to 29th days of the eleventh month. During this festival, traditional dances are performed.
