Tomb of Sheikh Noor-ud-din-Noorani


Situated in the south western part of Srinagar, the Tomb of Sheikh Noor-ud-din-Noorani is not only a mere religious shrine but a place of historical importance too. Referred as the flag carrier of Kashmir it is also called the Alamder – E – Kashmir. The Tomb of Sheikh Noor-ud-din-Noorani is actually located at Chrar – e – Sharief, which is twenty eight Kilometers away from the heart of the Srinagar City. The valuable site lies in the Budgam District of the state and one of the must visit places of the Jammu & Kashmir Pilgrim Tourism.

The famous shrine stands in the land, which belonged to Sangram Dar. The great sufi saint Sheikh Noor-ud-din-Noorani used to visit the mosque constructed by Sangram. According to some sources, the great preacher meditated continuously for twelve years in the seclusion of a cave. In accordance to historical findings, the Tomb of Sheikh Noor-ud-din-Noorani was built by Zain – Ul – Abedin after the death of the great saint. Sheikh Noor-ud-din-Noorani dedicated his life, spreading religious and social messages all over the Kashmir region.

The shrine was destroyed in a devastating fire during the war between the Indian Army and terrorist groups. The unfortunate incident in 1995 came as a rude shock to thousands of pilgrims and tourists. However the good news is that renewed efforts are on to restore the shrine.
