Jammu and Kashmir is nothing short of an Utopian paradise. The lofty hills with snowcapped peaks and green carpeted meadows resplendent in the colorful blooms of orchids and rhododendrons and the rippling streams and gurgling hilly rivers of the state cannot be adequately elucidated by any euphemism. Amongst the state's natural resources, the Jammu and Kashmir Walnuts hold a special place.
The Jammu and Kashmir Walnuts fall under the Juglandeae genus of plants and shrubs. The state is famed for its abundant walnut groves that are hypothesized to be the only region in the Indian subcontinent where the plant is grown. The trees are mammoth with their height towering approximately 50 to 75 feet above the ground. The rich texture, color and fine grains that are characteristic of walnut trees are not only an unique feature, but also help in assessing the quality of the plant.
The two major varieties of walnut trees predominant in Jammu and Kashmir are basically the fruit bearing varieties whose ripe, succulent fruits are are a delight to be plucked and eaten. These trees are also known for their fine wood and the ornate carvings and the intricate lattice work done on the wood is indeed a sight to behold. Another less popular variety is colloquially recognized as the zanguli. The wood is not as robust and sturdy as the former variety and is more or less devoid of grains.
Grains are generally a prominent feature in the dark walnut wood that stands tall with an almost jet black sheen. The trunk however is a shade lighter while the branches are fair in color as compared to its tanned and dusky counterpart. The precious wood serves a multitude of purposes and is used to make furniture, caskets and carvings that are a must buy of the Jammu and Kashmir shopping extravaganzas.
