Karnataka High Court



The Karnataka High Court (locally called Attara Kacheri) is the High Court for the state of Karnataka. In 1884, it was established under the Mysore High Court Act, 1884 and was then known as the Mysore High Court until 1973, when the name of the state was altered. The headquarter of Karnataka High Court is in Bangalore which is the administrative capital of the state. The judge strength of Karnataka High Court is 40.

    Present set up of judiciary in the state :

    Presently, recruitment and promotion in Karnataka Judicial Service are governed under the Karnataka Judicial Service (Recruitment) Rules, 1983.

    Karnataka High Court makes the initial recruitment of Civil Judges (junior division) and Judicial Magistrates First Class from amongst the practicing advocates with not less than 4 years' experience at the Bar or from amongst the Senior Assistant Public Prosecutors or Assistant Public Prosecutors with 4 years' service inclusive of Bar experience. There are 330 posts of Civil Judge (junior division).

    Civil Judges (Senior Division) and Chief Judicial Magistrates are purely promotional posts. Civil Judges (Junior Division) and Judicial Magistrates First Class are promoted to this position. There are 167 such posts.

    District Judges are directly recruited or promoted from Civil Judges (Senior Division) and Chief Judicial Magistrates in the ratio of 1:2. From amongst the members of the Bar with 7 years of practice, direct recruitment is made. There are 115 posts of District Judges.

    There are 20 posts of District and Sessions Judges (Supertime scale). These posts are filled up by promoting District and Sessions Judges with 5 years of service.
