Karnataka Housing Board was set up under Karnataka Housing Board Act 1962. The main aim of Karnataka Housing Board is to offer such schemes and carry out those works that fulfill the demand of housing accommodation of the people of Karnataka at an affordable cost.
Karnataka Housing Board is lead by the Chairman and a 13 member Board in which 8 are officials while the remaining 5 are non-officials. The Chief Executive and Administrative Officer of the Karnataka Housing Board is the Housing Commissioner. As per the Karnataka Housing Board Act 1962, a Chief Engineer and Secretary is to be appointed.
As per the Karnataka Housing Board Act 1962 and the State Government, the Karnataka Housing Board has to undertake the responsibility of layout formation, housing schemes and land development schemes such as :
- Composite Housing Schemes (CHS)
- Group Housing Schemes
- Multistoried Apartments
- Labour Housing Schemes
- Sites and Services Schemes
- Satellite Towns
- Layouts
- Commercial Plazas
It is the Karnataka Housing Board that assures water and electricity from the local authority and takes over the responsibility of maintenance of townships such as road repairs, garbage clearance, maintenance of street light, security, etc, till it is not handed over to the local municipality.
Karnataka Housing Board has been working towards meeting the housing demands of people of all income groups - Low Income Group, Middle Income Group and High Income Group. And this is why it has set up Project Implementation Unit and Customer Services Unit in all its townships and layouts.
