Vijaya Daily newspaper, Karnataka is an English daily published by the Vijayanand Publisher. It was founded and published by Vijay Sankeshwara alongwith the Kannad daily, Vijaya Karnataka, as a part of the Vijaya group of newspapers. It was fast enough to cut an edge for itself in the world of English dailies in Karnataka.
The Vijaya group has recently been bought over by the Bennet and Coleman Co. Ltd., which happens to be one of the biggest news publishing houses in India and the publishers of the Times of India. Within a short time Vijaya Daily newspaper, Karnataka managed to create a wide following among a major section of the inhabitants of the state. The readers considered the take-over as a loss, and debates ensued following the purchase.
The high-profile take-over of the newspaper resulted in a change of nomenclature, with Vijaya Daily newspaper, Karnataka becoming Vijaya Times. At first, Chennan Das, the CEO did ensure the readership, that despite being sister publications, Vijaya Daily newspaper and the Times of India, would compete with each other independently. Bangalore was the seat of these two newspapers fighting for increasing readership. The early periods saw a financial gain for Vijaya Daily newspaper, Karnataka. That did result in the readers harboring hopes for the better days that lay in future for their favorite newspaper.
However, soon the Times of India became the most widely selling English newspaper in Karnataka. Karnataka's Vijaya Daily newspaper concentrated more on sports, fashion, entertainment and lifestyle. It increasingly took the form of a tabloid with a change in size and style of presentation. Although Vijaya Daily newspaper, Karnataka is now different from what it was originally meant to be, yet it did survive the changing times and still continues to be widely read across the state.
